Boys and girls and even old women collect donations from house to house and the money so collected is spent on parties and feasts. The Thabal Chongba – a kind of Manipuri fold dance, where boys and girls hold hands together and sing and dance in a circle, is particularly associated with this festival.

YaosangĬelebrated for five days commencing from the full moon day of Phalguna (February/March), Yaoshang is the premier festival of Manipur. The annual festival also plays a great role in boosting the moral and strengthening the bond of Naga solidarity. Social-gathering, songs, dances and rejoicing highlight the festivity. This is a seed sowing festival after which tribes belonging to the Naga group begin their cultivation.

It is a collective festival of the Nagas observed on the 15th day of February every year. The festival opens with the omen taking ceremony on the first day and the rest of the days are associated with common feast, dances of old men and women and of boys and girls, presentation of farewell gifts etc.

"Transgenders are an ugly reality of the Meitei society. According to some estimates, there may be well over 40,000 transgenders in Imphal valley alone. Generally, members of the transgender community move together holding each other's hands during the dance performances. We have rights to dance too at par with others," said Biju. "It is as if they question what we are doing in Thabal Chongba. Though the third gender is widely accepted and visible in public spaces of Manipur, their harassment goes untold during the dance programmes of the Yaoshang festivities. "They can't pass comments at women for fear of public backlash. "Often drunk men ask us to serve them oral pleasure during Thabal Chongba," said Naina, one of the many transwomen attending the traditional five day dance held at night during Holi or Yaoshang festivities.

IMPHAL: The loud rhythmic beats of Manipur’s traditional Thabal Chongba dance muffle a lot of miseries, among which is the harassment faced by the third gender.
